Frequently Asked Questions

Infrared Sauna FAQ

What is an infrared sauna and how does it work?

Infrared saunas use panels that warm your body directly instead of heating the air like a traditional steam sauna. The result is a deep, comfortable heat that feels gentle and is easy to stay in for longer sessions. Most people describe it as a smoother, more relaxing type of warmth.

How hot does an infrared sauna get?

Air temperatures are usually lower than a steam sauna, but the heat feels just as effective because it penetrates the body rather than surrounding you with high heat. Typical ranges vary by model, and most users preheat the cabin for around 10–20 minutes.

What are the benefits of using an infrared sauna?

Many people use infrared saunas to ease everyday muscle tension, support circulation, wind down after workouts, and improve general wellbeing. The gentle heat makes them easy to use regularly and suits people who prefer a less intense experience than a traditional sauna.

Do infrared saunas plug into a normal household socket?

Most smaller infrared saunas are designed for standard UK plugs, though larger multi-person or full-spectrum units may require a dedicated electrical circuit. Always check the power rating on the specific product page and follow the guidance of a qualified electrician if unsure.

How long should an infrared sauna session last?

New users often start with 10–15 minutes and gradually increase to 20–30 minutes. Many people use an infrared sauna three to five times a week. Listen to your body, stay hydrated, and step out if you feel light-headed or uncomfortable.

Are infrared saunas safe to use?

They’re widely used at home and in spas and are generally safe for most healthy adults. As with any heat therapy, hydration is important. If you’re pregnant, have a heart condition, or take specific medications, check with a healthcare professional before use.

What’s the difference between far infrared and full-spectrum infrared?

Far infrared provides deeper, gentler warmth, while full-spectrum models combine different wavelengths for a broader heat profile. Some users prefer the softer feel of far infrared; others like the more immediate warmth full-spectrum panels provide. Product pages list which heater type each model uses.

Do infrared saunas require much maintenance?

Very little. Wipe down surfaces after use, keep the glass clean, and let the cabin air out by leaving the door open for a few minutes. There are no stones to replace and no plumbing involved.

Can I assemble an infrared sauna myself?

Most infrared saunas arrive flat-packed and slot together using pre-fitted connectors. Two adults can usually assemble one in under 60–90 minutes. If the model requires a dedicated electrical connection, a qualified electrician should complete that part.

Is EMF something I should be concerned about?

Many infrared saunas are engineered with low-EMF technology. When low EMF is a feature of a particular model, it will be listed clearly on the product page so you can choose based on your preferences.

Outdoor Sauna FAQ

Can any sauna be used outdoors?

Not all saunas are outdoor rated. Only models specifically designed for outdoor use should be exposed to weather. Outdoor saunas use treated timber, reinforced panels, and moisture-resistant construction. Indoor units can warp, leak, or suffer electrical damage if placed outside.

Do outdoor saunas need a roof or shelter?

A built-in roof is designed to provide basic protection, but placing the sauna under a canopy or sheltered area significantly improves weather resistance and long-term durability. A small overhang or roof kit also helps reduce constant rain exposure and ongoing maintenance.

What kind of base or foundation is required?

Outdoor saunas must sit on a solid, level, and well-drained base. Suitable options include concrete pads, paving slabs, decking, or compacted gravel with a stable frame. Avoid soil or uneven ground, as this can affect door alignment and structural stability over time.

How does cold weather affect outdoor saunas?

Cold weather can increase warm-up times, especially below 5°C, but outdoor-rated saunas are designed for year-round use. Wind exposure and open locations can cause heat loss, so placing the sauna in a sheltered spot improves efficiency and comfort.

Is electrical installation different for outdoor saunas?

Yes. Outdoor installations require outdoor-rated cabling, RCD protection, and weather-safe enclosures. Electrical work should always be completed by a qualified electrician. Exact requirements depend on the heater type and wattage, so always check the product specifications.

Do outdoor saunas need ventilation?

Yes. A small amount of clearance around the sauna allows moisture to evaporate naturally and helps the structure breathe. Internal vents manage airflow during use and help the cabin dry after each session.

How much maintenance does an outdoor sauna require?

Outdoor saunas require occasional exterior wood treatment or sealant to protect against weather. Keep the base clear of leaves, debris, and standing water. Interior maintenance is minimal: wipe benches, clean glass, and leave the door open after use.

Can I put an outdoor sauna on decking?

Yes, provided the decking is strong, level, and well ventilated underneath. Composite or hardwood decking works particularly well. Make sure water drains away from the sauna rather than pooling beneath it.

Will rain or moisture damage an outdoor sauna?

Outdoor-rated saunas are built to handle moisture, but constant heavy rain, poor drainage, or standing water can reduce the lifespan of the exterior. Regular wood treatment and sheltered placement significantly improve long-term durability.

Can I install an outdoor sauna inside a garden room or summerhouse instead?

Yes. Many customers install outdoor saunas inside garden rooms or summerhouses for added protection and improved heat-up performance. The structure should remain dry, ventilated, and suitable for the sauna’s electrical requirements.
